A Smooth Start: My Family’s Favorite Kiwi Banana Blend

In my family, we all love this smoothie (well, except for my husband who isn't a big fruit lover anyway). Our kids adore kiwi fruit and often eat it on its own, but this smoothie is perfect for packing in lots of vitamins and minerals to kickstart the day on a healthy note.

Bananas are fantastic because they provide potassium, which is great for muscle function, and fiber, which keeps digestion running smoothly. They also have Vitamin B6, which supports brain health. Kiwis are little powerhouses of Vitamin C and antioxidants, boosting our immune system and helping our skin look radiant. They’re also rich in dietary fiber and Vitamin K. The plain yogurt adds a creamy texture while giving us a good dose of calcium for strong bones and probiotics for a happy tummy.

This smoothie is my lifesaver on hectic mornings when I need my kids to have a more filling breakfast. I usually pair it with a handful of nuts or a slice of whole-grain toast to keep them full and energized until lunch. Another great idea is to serve it alongside some avocado toast or a couple of fried eggs. What is the best way to peel kiwi fruit?

Slice off both ends of the kiwi fruit using a sharp knife. Hold the kiwi in one hand with one of the cut ends facing towards you. Insert a spoon just under the skin of the kiwi, making sure to keep it as close to the skin as possible to minimize wastage of the flesh. Gently slide the spoon around the kiwi under the skin, rotating the fruit as you go. The skin will separate from the fruit as you slide the spoon around. Once you've worked the spoon all the way around, the kiwi fruit should easily slide out of the skin in one whole piece.

 

How can I tell if a kiwi fruit is ripe?

A ripe kiwi should yield to slight pressure when you press it gently with your thumb. If it's hard, it's not ripe yet. If it feels mushy or very soft, it's likely overripe. Also, a ripe kiwi will have a slightly wrinkled skin, but not overly so. The skin should also be free of bruises, cuts, or punctures. Ripe kiwi fruit often has a fragrant, sweet, and slightly tangy smell. If it has no smell, it may not be ripe yet. If it has an overly strong or fermented smell, it may be overripe.
